Year 5 The Clink Museum

The Clink Prison Museum welcomes a large number of educational groups and visitors each year, offering them a unique opportunity to learn about social, religious and historical issues relating to The Clink Prison and London’s Bankside. Many of these issues and events relating to The Clink Prison don’t only represent regional importance but national and international significance.  When visiting The Clink Prison Museum, students will have the opportunity to handle original historical artefacts relating to crime and punishment, used both in The Clink Prison and nationally.

The Clink Prison dates back to 1144 making it one of England’s oldest and most notorious prisons. Positioned in the heart of modern-day Southwark and built on the original site, The Clink Prison Museum presents the scandalous truth of Old Bankside through a hands-on educational experience. There are opportunities to view archaeological artefacts, experience the sights, sounds and smells of the prison, handle torture devices, and to view and hear all about the tales of torment and many misfortunes of the inmates of the infamous Clink Prison.

I with these halls of grey stone
Mystically changes into my home.
The officers, rules regulations,
I would trade any day for my Sony Playstation.
At home there would be love and peace,
Instead here altercations never cease.
So much time here, so little to do,
Out in the real world, I wish that were true.

Our lovely Year 5 children had the opportunity to visit the Clink Museum today.  As part of their topic Crime and Punishment, the children explored the many features of the "prison". Steeped in history, the children could really appreciate what they have been learning about in their lessons. They attended a really good workshop too!  A lovely day was had by all and thankfully none were left behind bars!
