Year 6 @ Merton's Junior Citizens Workshop

Merton’s Junior Citizenship event is being held this week at the Chaucer Centre in Morden to give youngsters an insight into the workings of society and arm them with life skills to prepare them for adulthood.  Between Monday and Friday, over 900 Year Six schoolchildren will gather together to  take part in event, coordinated by Merton’s Road Safety Education Team.

Several organisations are working in partnership to put the school children through life-like scenarios and workshops. Participants include Neighbourhood and Metropolitan Police Teams, Royal National Lifeboat Institute, London Fire Brigade, Transport for London, Youth Awareness Programme and Road Safety.

Merton Council’s cabinet member for community safety and engagement, Councillor Tariq Ahmad said, “It’s important that children are aware of the ways in which different institutions work in society. These events teach children skills that could potentially save a life and avoid a serious situation. This event demonstrates Merton Council’s commitment to providing young people with the necessary tools to make them responsible citizens from an early age.”

Our lovely Year 6 children attended the Chaucer Centre in Morden this morning for a fun packed time, with serious messages for them to take into their teen years and beyond.  There was such a lot of importance advice and information that the children heard about and they thoroughly enjoyed their time there this morning.
